Having discussed this matter with multitudes of christians over the years, I think I’ve probably encountered every possible argument they use to justify their celebration of the false christ-mass, and this is a very typical one in their bevy of worldly rationalizations.
First, understand that an argument from silence is the weakest of all logical constructs (the bible doesn’t tell me NOT to walk naked in my front yard when the school bus is dropping off kids); but, no, dear reader, saying that scripture doesn’t forbid celebrating christ-mass actually just shows that you do not understand what the scriptures do tell us.
Let’s go back to the Ten Commandments (are you KIDDING? The Ten Commandments don’t say anything about christ-mass!). Yes, the Ten Commandments actually do speak to this. What does it mean that we are not to “take God’s name in vain”? It isn’t actually about uttering anything (no, the commandment has nothing to do with saying “God damn,” for “God” is not even the Creator’s name).
To take His name in vain means to attach Him to what is false, worthless, and/or idolatrous. We are not to attach Him to rituals, traditions, observances, or holydays that are not of Him, but are pagan in origin. Both christ-mass and easter/ishtar have always been purely pagan traditions—invented by pagans, celebrated by pagans, and still present in modern pagan worship.
Christ-mass is the hijacking of the pagan birthday celebration of the sun god, or “Dies Natalis Solis Invicti” (Birthday of the Unconquered Sun) on December 25, and it has nothing to do with Messiah Yahoshua at all. It is thoroughly pagan. And, associating Messiah’s birth with this false pagan sun god’s “birthday” celebration is exactly what the third commandment forbids.
“But, that’s so Old Testament,” as if scripture isn’t scripture, and the Father changed His mind somewhere between the writing of the OT and the NT (it’s bizarre how some christians actually think like that). Okay, so what are we told in the New Testament?
Well, Messiah Yahoshua explained a vital truth about what is acceptable living before the Father in John 4:24 (and, it’s important to understand that “worship” isn’t something one attends, but is actually the practical lives of those who possess the covenant, which was foreshadowed by the physical temple in Jerusalem—there are two words that are translated “worship;” it means either bowing prostrate in reverence, or it means simply “to labor”).
Messiah said that those who worship the Father MUST do so in spirit and in TRUTH. So, what is the flip-side of that statement? If something in the practical living of His children is not TRUTH, then it is not acceptable to the Father. Yah abhors lies. We know that Messiah called Satan “the father of lies.” That which is not truth is not worship, which means it is not acceptable to the Father, and the Holy Spirit can have NO PART in any of it.
Did you catch that? The Holy Spirit CANNOT participate in anything even related to a christ-mass celebration, for the Holy Spirit cannot be a part of anything that is false, and the christ-mass is completely false. It is the birthday celebration for a false god—the sun god.
And, it is also false because we know the day of the year that Messiah was actually born. He was born on the Feast of Tabernacles, which is in the Fall each year. So, anyone who claims that scripture doesn’t forbid those who are saved from celebrating christ-mass doesn’t know scripture.
However, there is an important caveat in that. False pagan celebrations with Messiah attached to them are clearly forbidden of those who are Yah’s children, but that actually has nothing to do with those who are lost in false belief systems. Yah’s instructions apply only to His children. They don’t apply to the world, and they don’t apply to those who are not His children, and are in false religions.
The law of Moses (the precepts, or ordinances, that were given along with the Ten Commandments, which were the physical covenant) only applied to those who possessed the covenant. Those laws did not apply to physical Gentiles, but to physical Jews (those with circumcised flesh). That was a foreshadow of the bride keeping herself separate from the world.
Yah’s instructions are not given to the world (the children of the devil), but to Yah’s children (those who have been adopted by Him—they have circumcised hearts).
Now, christianity is a counterfeit of the true faith, invented by stripping away the foundations of the faith and replacing them with pagan trash like christ-mass, easter/ishtar, and SUNday assembling. Thus, christianity being a counterfeit, those who are lost in it are not worshiping in spirit or in truth, but are deceived by spiritual lies and distortions.
Actually, muslims are not forbidden from their holydays, buddhists are not forbidden from their holydays, and christians are not forbidden from their holydays. They are all false religions, and have nothing to do with the actual truths of the Holy Spirit—they have nothing to do with the one true Messiah Yahoshua.
Those who actually DO have the Holy Spirit, on the other hand, are clearly told in the scriptures NOT to enter into the corrupt traditions and holydays of false religions, which includes the false holydays of christianity (SUNday assembling, christ-mass, easter/ishtar, good Friday, lent, halloween, valentine’s day, etc.).
Yah’s true children are to identify with Him by honoring the only holydays that HE ordained and gives to His children as a family sign—His Sabbaths (weekly and feasts). Those are HIS days.
All other false religious holydays belong to the father of lies, and those who honor those days are actually honoring the one who created those days to lead people away from the truth (even if they honor the enemy unwittingly, much like those we see in Matthew 7:21-23). Those false celebrations come from the one who often masquerades as an angel of light.
